Five times per week (immediately preceeding our squad and Time:4:Me swim sessions) on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday morning we conduct a free Core Stability & Flexibility session for our athletes. See our timetable for more details.
If you have never tried one of these sessions before, core stability essentially refers to the ‘core’ muscles whose strength is vital as a base of support for efficient and effective limb movements. Most commonly this refers to the pelvic floor, deep abdominals and deep spinal muscles in the back region but other muscles are involved in core stability of the pelvis, neck and shoulder. Good core stability is vital for a triathlete's optimal performance and is important for general day-2-day postural correction.
The 25-minute session acts as a perfect warm-up for the squad swim session and features a range of triathlon-specific flexibility and mobility exercises which will ensure that you are well-tuned prior to the swim.
Completing core stability sessions on a regular basis has been theorised to help prevent injury through specific strengthening of key muscle groups without adding unnecessary bulk which may occur with a standard gym strengthening program.
All athletes will require their own stretch mat for this session.
