Georgia Wood - triathlon training at Cottesloe Beach

We are pleased to announce that the April 2008 Hall of Fame athlete is Georgia Wood!

Georgia originally joined The TEAM CORE in February 2007 whilst training for the Melbourne Marathon later that year in order to gain qualification to race at the New York Marathon in November 2007. Unfortunately, owing to various factors beyond her control, Georgia did not race at either marathon but instead worked diligently to improve her running form and consistency over the Perth summer with a view to re-acquainting herself with triathlon and in particular, Half Ironman.

Georgia left Perth in March 2008 to return to Bath in sunny old England and her position as a cardiac technician at the Royal Bath Hospital and has commenced training for the 2008 UK Ironman 70.3 championships in Wimbleball, Exmoor on the 15th June 2008. This super-hilly course will suit Georgia's sleek profile down to the ground and we're confident she'll put up a great performance!

However, it was Georgia's Bath Half Marathon P.B time of 1:22.29 (an average of 3:55/km if you don't mind!) on Sunday 16th March which gains her recognition in The TEAM CORE's first Hall of Fame! Georgia finished 16th female overall in this event which was an outstanding result given that the Bath Half is one of the most prestigious half marathons in the UK!

Literally just one week prior to the event whilst out on our Monday morning long run, Georgia said to Paul (Newsome) that there was no way she could envisage holding 4:00/km for the event (her target and our current running pace at the time) - it just goes to show what good preparation and periodisation can do for your performances!

Well done Georgia!

Said Georgia after the race:

"The race this morning -  WET and MISERABLE in Bath, Ross, Kylie (Mansfield) and my friend Jacquie and I jogged down to the start in bin bags we arrived to find a field looking similar to glastonbury (muddy) and people saying the start had been delayed by an hour! Nightmare. We jogged back freezing cold and went inside my place to stay warm. The second time we left a bit late and had to hurry down there I wore three bin bags this time and an old T-shirt to throw away. Panicked when we were miles behind thousands of people and I wanted to be at the front. Made it there in the end to the 'A' start. I'm afraid to say I didn't start at 4:09 pace I set off and I was running 3:50 but it felt fine and I tried to slow as my garmin was showing something like 3:43! I decided it must be broken there was no way I could run that pace and feel fine! Anyway I kept going and I felt really comfortable untill 10mile (apart from my stomach) I picked up the pace gradually from 10miles onwards and only found the last mile really painful as I was trying to pick off a lady in front. I crossed the finish line in 1:22.29. I think I was in the top 20 ladies? I was over the moon but felt a bit yukky. I think the stomach was down to eating with a friend last night who is vegan I took the option of being socailble and spending the evening with friends over staying in and eating my normal kind of pre race food. I also had a blister on my heal which hurt less with racing flats on so I wore them, half way round I thought I had a stone in my shoe but in fact my skin got creased on the sole of my foot which formed a blister - oh well!"
